The sport of mixed martial arts is about to have its first ever trade. UFC and ONE Championship are discussing the first ever trade in MMA history that could involve former UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson and former ONE welterweight champion Ben Askren per ESPN.
Demetrious Johnson and Ben Askren must be released from their respective contracts with the UFC and ONE Championship. UFC and ONE have been involved in lengthy discussions, due to both fighters still having multiple fights in their current contracts. However, all parties are confident that a deal will materialize.
Johnson, who was on a 13-fight winning streak & successfully defend flyweight title 11 times (most in UFC history) lost to longtime rival Henry Cejudo this past August will look to bounce back and dominate the ONE Championship flyweight division.
The unbeaten Askren announced his retirement on November 2017, after defeating Shinya Aoki in the 1st Round. Shortly after retiring, Askren said that he’s only willing to come out of retirement to face Bellator welterweight Rory MacDonald or Georges St. Pierre, who won the UFC middleweight title from Michael Bisping but was forced to vacate the title in December 2017 due to medical complications.
